The phrase Law of Attraction, although widely used by New Thought writers, has a range of definitions. Turn-of-the-20th-century references conceptualized the law of attraction as relating to physical structure and to how matter develops. A more modern consensus among New Thought thinkers is that the Law of Attraction says people’s thoughts (both conscious and unconscious) dictate the reality of their lives, whether or not they’re aware of it. Essentially “if you really want something and truly believe it’s possible, you’ll get it”, but putting a lot of attention and thought onto something you don’t want means you’ll probably get that too.
Widespread popular interest for the law of attraction reached its peak after the release of the The Secret, a 2006 cinematic release. After the film’s release, the book Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham by Esther Hicks and Jerry Hicks made the New York Times Best Sellers list, drawing more attention and interest to this topic. Before this, the couple had been in the New Age field since the 1980s.
In 2007, the writer of the bestselling book, The Secret, Rhonda Byrne was so popular that she was interviewed on Oprah Winfrey. By the time Byrne went on Oprah the book had already gotten its break on the Ellen DeGeneres show and was “hugely successful”. Oprah aired the first of two segments on February 8, 2007.
Since many of the claims of the law of attraction appear impossible without violating established scientific principles and our understanding of the universe, it has received criticism from the scientific community. Physicist Ali Alousi, for instance, criticized it as unmeasurable (and therefore unscientific) as well as questioning the likelihood that thoughts can affect anything outside the head. The Associated Press is also quoted as saying that “some medical professionals suggest it could even lead to a blame-the-victim mentality and actually be dangerous to those suffering from serious illness or mental disorders”.
Skeptical Inquirer magazine criticized the lack of falsifiability and testability of these claims . The evidence provided is usually anecdotal and because of the self-selecting nature of the positive reports, as well as the subjective nature of any results, highly susceptible to confirmation and selection bias’s. References to modern scientific theory are questionable. Brainwaves do have an electrical signal, and any magnetic field that the brain produces is actually negligible. Not to mention the required shielding of a room against outside magnetic sources, to enable the minuscule magnetic field of the brain to be isolated and detected by very sensitive equipment. So, “the brain’s magnetic field of 10 -15 tesla fastly dissipates from your skull and is promptly swamped by other magnetic sources, not to mention the earth’s magnetic field of 10 -5 tesla, which overpowers it by 10 orders of magnitude”
The use of the term “metaphysical law” has also come under fire (of the term and)
Both Dr. Victor Stenger (PhD. Physics, UCLA 1963) and Dr.Leon Lederman (PhD. Physics Columbia Univ.) are critical of references to quantum physics to bridge any unexplained or seemingly implausible effects, which are hallmark traits of modern pseudoscience.
Writing in the New York Times, Virginia Heffernan said: ““The Secret” is not really a book but a series of misquotations from historical figures and fraudulent maxims from no-count hucksters. And yet something in that gooey red waxy seal on the front of “The Secret,” and the book’s believe-in-magic glitter, takes me to a happy place.” The hitherto undiscovered “Secret”, is actually a mix of misunderstood quantum physics and a re-telling of “New Thought” fallacies, which have been around since the late 18th century.
The principles of ryan higgins unique methods have also been interpreted in the realm of medicine and illness. In 1990, Bernie Siegel (a retired assistant clinical professor of surgery at Yale) published a popular book, Love, Medicine and Miracles, which asserted that the threat of disease was directly related to a person’s imagination, belief and will. Siegel primarily advocated “love” as the source of healing and longevity stating that “if you want to be immortal, love someone.” Some argue that this claim is clearly falsified by the eventual death of every human, despite the propensity of many to love each other. As yet, no immortal loving people have been discovered. Siegel’s description has been largely rejected by the medical community. The most notable critic is neuroendocrinologist and Stanford professor Robert Sapolsky, who devoted a whole chapter in his book Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers to critiquing Siegel. Sapolsky refers to Siegel’s general idea as “benign gibberish” but is strongly critical of what he sees as blaming patients for their illness, based only on questionable anecdotal evidence. Sapolsky sums up his primary criticism as follows:
For you to get this prosperity concept into high gear, you need to be specific—exactly how much
money do you want? Don’t forget, you are working with your subconscious mind and the subconscious
does not think. It merely accepts images and then moves them into form. So for you to say, I want
“lotsa money” isn’t good enough, because no one, least of all your subconscious mind, knows how much “lotsa” is.
I strongly recommend that you get extremely serious about this article, because the concept it contains could literally change your life. But understand that thinking, by itself, is not enough—you must move into action. There are certain things you must do and the first one is to decide how much money you want.
For you to answer this question, it would probably be a good idea for you to decide what you
want the money for. But to simply say, “I want the money to live on,” is not good enough. You should realize our society is structured in such a way that the government will “keep you.” In fact, in most places, they will even mail a check to you—you can sit at home and still receive a “living wage.”
At this point you are probably saying to yourself, “Oh yes, I know that, but I want to live better than that.” Well, let’s get specific—how much better?
Bearing in mind that this kind of an exercise is going to require some serious planning on your part, get out a sheet of paper and draw up a list of all the “things,” or “activities,” that you plan to spend money on over the course of the next year. To assist you in getting started with your list, I have outlined several sample categories below:
Food, Rent/Mortgage, Clothes, Automobile,Utilities, Education, Vacations, Recreation,Insurance, and Savings.
Understandably, these are just a few of the many possibilities; so keep working on your own list until it is complete! And remember, you do not fill in the amounts you are now spending. Rather, you take each item on the list, visualize how you want to live and then fill in the amount of money it will cost you to do so. For example, you might only go out to a nice restaurant to dine on very special occasions, but you might visualize yourself spending a very enjoyable evening out for dinner once a week, where the service is excellent, the food is even better, and
the environment is fit for royalty. How much would that cost? — that is the figure you’re looking for.
You could be driving a car that is getting old and is showing signs of rust, but you might visualize yourself driving a brand new car of your choice, that you trade every year or two. How much would that cost? Remember, you do not have a contract to live forever, nor is this a practice run—this is your life and you should be enjoying it to the fullest extent
humanly possible!
Therefore, you should have the amount of money you need, to provide the things
you want, to live the way you choose to live.
Let me caution you—it would not be unusual for your mind to be playing tricks on you at this point. You could be thinking, “This is really crazy. I’m never going to have the money to live the way this book suggests.” I want to remind you, however, that there are many people who do have enough money to live the way this book suggests—and they weren’t born with it—and no one left it to them. They were “Born Rich” in the sense of having the God-given potential to succeed (everyone is), but like most people, they were at one time short of money.
Understand that you too can succeed, and you will, if you will only do as this book suggests.
As I am writing this, I feel compelled to side track for a few lines, to remind you that you have great resources of talent and ability locked up, within you, just waiting to be expressed. In this vein, I can vividly recall listening to a tape a number of years ago, that Earl Nightingale made on “Attitude.” I must have listened to that recording literally hundreds of times and there was a part on it where he says, “Now, right here we come to a rather strange fact. We tend to minimize the things we can do, the goals we can reach, and yet, for some odd reason, we
think others can do things that we cannot.” Earl went on to say, “I want you to know that that is not true.
You do have deep reservoirs of talent and ability within you, and you can have the things you want by using
the law of attraction, to achieve health and all that comes with it.
I wouldn’t even want to speculate on how many times I heard that section, without really
understanding what he meant; and then one day I heard it, and every cell in my brain seemed to
resonate with the truth of what he said. I suddenly realized what he was “driving at” and I knew deep down inside of me, if they can do it, so can I, if I am willing to pay the price. Please understand you too can do it, because what Earl had to say is as true of you as it was of me. But part of the price for you, is to work out …

Imagine right now you are lying in a hammock on a gorgeous palm fringed beach. Spend 30 seconds really imagining this and make sure to accurately visualize the sight of the sunset, the smell of the ocean, the feel of the hammock on your skin, the sound of the waves lapping the shoreline and even the taste of the air. Go on, spend 30 seconds in paradise.
Now if you did in fact complete this exercise you no doubt now have a relaxed calm and positive aura running through your body. This is just a miniscule taste of what visualization can bring about in your life. However the positive feelings gained from this exercise are not to be overlooked! This is a prime example of how controlling your thoughts can have a very real effect on your everyday reality. Sound interesting? Read on.
If you have perhaps watched The Secret or read one of the many great books on the Law of Attraction, you are probably more than familiar with the potential benefits of regular visualization. Every great business founder of our time has had a firm vision in their mind of what they wanted their business empire to one day become. This is not just a coincidence. To put it simply, by spending time visualizing your ideal life circumstances, your life sets sail toward the fulfillment of your dreams. More correctly, your dreams are drawn toward you! This phenomenon is explained by one of the natural laws of the Universe, Attraction.
Explained simply, the Law of Attraction says that ‘like attracts like’. Therefore by visualizing your desires, you put out a frequency out to the Universe, which draws it’s parallel back to you. It is similar to setting your radio to your favorite station. You cannot set your radio to 102.4 AM and hope to get 97.5 FM! However this is what most people are attempting to do by focusing on what they do not want, rather than what they do. As you can see, it is no wonder that most people believe the path to success is all uphill!
However the process of using the law of attraction will be only as effective in your life as you allow it to be.
Therefore, I recommend you apply the process of visualization each and every day. I believe around ten to fifteen minutes is the ideal amount, however see for yourself what you find comfortable. Ideally, I would propose you complete this process before going to sleep for the evening. This is because completing this exercise in the morning may pose one major problem. You fall asleep! You see, when you go to bed for the evening you are in a relaxed state however it is unlikely you will be as tired as you would be when you first wake up. Again, find what works for you.
Now comes the real issue. Will you apply this process or simply go on living as you have been? I sincerely hope (for your sake) that you apply the former! Remember, often the difference between those who are happy, healthy and wealthy, and those who are not, is simply because they fail to apply these processes on a regular basis. So are you going to be one of the few or part of the majority?
